The PP (Partido Poplar....conservative party) lost today in the local elections the absolute majority in the Balearic Parlament, by finishing with 28 of 30 representatives that would be necessary to have an absolute majorty, this gives tthe PSOE (Socialist party) an opportunity to open a process of negotiation to re-edit the ?Treaty of progress? that governed the islands between 1999 and 2003.
The PP lost the absolute majority and obtained 28 representatives, meaning that the party 'Union Mallorquina' will once more be the key to forming the governments alliances after obtaining 3 representatives.
The PSIB-PSOE was the second most voted political party with 16 representatives, while the coalition formed in Ibiza by PSOE and 'Eivissa pel Canvi' was the 3rd with 6 representatives, followed by Bloc per Mallorca with 4, UM with 3 and PSM-VERDS and AIPF with 1 representative each.
The PP candidate to re election as president of the govern, Jaume Matas, underlined the support obtained in the local elections, in what he calls ?the best results in the history of his party?, however he regretted the loss of the absolute majority.
Francesc Antich, PSIB-PSEO candidate, assured that the results of the elections show that ?the people have once more voted for the change.?
Nowhere is the desire for change more evident than in the highest local governing body, the
'Consell Insular', where Pere Palau and his Partido Popular have been ousted in favor of
Xicu Tarrés (the former mayor of Ibiza) and his party: 'Eivissa pel Canví'.
The consequences of this victory by the socialist coalition are far reaching, and will certainly involve changes in the new highways, and a green light for many coaltion projects like 'Ibiza Centre' which have suffered blockages from the former conservative consell.
