What makes a holiday-maker perfect guest? Who is liked and who not? A study of the on-line travel agency Expedia goes to these and other questions.
Results of the study: the Japanese and the Americans are the most popular tourists, the Russians, Indians and Frenchman share last place. Germany slipped to the fifth place.

Which holiday-makers are liked and which are hated with the European Hoteliers?
Tourists, who leave their hotel rooms in the chaos, scrimp on the tip, transform the hotel rooms into a party hell at night or stroll around with white tennis socks and sandals on the boardwalk - all this does not make tourists very popular guests.
The on-line travel portal Expedia wanted to know it exactly and signed up with the "Umfrageinstitut Gfk" for a representative study.
They asked 15,000 Hoteliers from whole Europe about the reputation of the tourists. "We were interested simply, in which travelers from all world on the vacation behave themselves and which impression the tourists left with the Hoteliers ", says Jens Uwe Parkitny, managing director of Expedia Germany about the philosophy of the inquiry.
Altogether ten questions had to be answered. One asked for politeness, generosity, tidyness, fashion consciousness and interest in the host country. The study was re-newed after 2002 for the second time and so permits comparisons.
At place 1 the Japanese are the most appreciated. They received peak values throughout. They are politely, calm and very interested in the culture of the country. In addition they are considered as very happy. At place 2 ,surprisingly, the Americans . There are loud and have a have fashion consciousness at the last place, they are however, polite, spend much money and are very interested in the country and its culinary specialties. Swiss receive place 3 - in particula,r because of their politeness.
In the last place- Frenchmen With the Hoteliers they seem to have a bad reputation throughout. Above all the refusal to even try to learn some words of the language of the host country . Also the lacking a desire try culinary specialties of the hosts does not leave a good picture and with tips they are also stingy.
Only in fashion consciousness they are exemplary, similar to Spaniards and Italians. At the next to last place are the Indians, which according to the hoteleliers, leave the hotel rooms in renovation-needy condition.
Also reservations from Chinese and Russian holiday-makers do not provide the Hoteliers with joy. The Chinese are considered polite, but in addition, loud and stingy.
The Russians divide their image with the British. Both nations are not unkown for their consumption of alcohol, or for with the condition of the rooms they leave behind. Fashion seems to be for both nations, a foreign word.
And the Germans? Who five years earlier were in firsst place, now have to be content with place 5. They are considered as polite, tidy and interested in the country, but in addition, as stingy and badly dressed. The Germans get onme higher point in the categories cleanliness and order. Interesting detail: the German Hoteliers sees German tourists much differently than their European colleagues. They consider the German guests impolite (the last but one place), give however good notes for the clothes (third place).
In summary th hoteliers conclude that Asians are polite, Germans clean, but stingy and not very fashion-conscious, the British and Russians drink and are loud, Italians and Spaniards are loud, dressed elegantly and Frenchmen are arrogant.
