José Lus Rodriguez Zapatero-Spain's NEW PRESIDENT! |
José Lus Rodriguez Zapatero, General Secretary of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) will govern Spain during the next four years. The surprise victory of the Socialists is seen as the direct aftermath of the massacre bombing on March 11. The Conservatives (Partido Popular) were
seen by the electorate as being accountable for the bombing attacks, in
light of last minute evidence which points more to Al Qaida terrorists as
the organization responsible for the blasts, than to the ETA Spanish Basque
terrorists.President María José Aznar, and his foreign policy, which was tightly aligned with that of American President George Bush, were held accountable by the electorate for the very unpopular decision to enter the Iraq war on the side of the Americans.....amid and in spite of massive public protests, and for what the Spanish public sees as the direct consequence of this decision (the 11 MAR. massacre). This victory, is of course, seen as a bad omen for the plans of the conservative party which controls the parliament of the Balearic Islands, and in the local elections of less than a year ago, wrested control from the 'Progresistsas'.....(the consortium of political parties led by the Socilaists). |
