JUNE 30,2004 "Warmin' UP!"...The island prepares for the new season.. |
The nine
fires of Sant Joan :The "Sant Joan" festivity is celebrated in almost all the parishes of Ibiza. It is a celebration that goes back to biblical times and celebrates the Summer Stoltice (the longest day of the year) Fire is the main element of the night before (June 23), the magic night full of symbolism, and the day of the Saint (June 24) there are masses and processions. It is also the Patron Saint day for all Spaniards with the name Juan. One of the most interesting fiestas is the one in Sant
Joan de Labritja in the north of Ibiza. The "Macarrones de Sant Joan",
but specially the nine fires that are lit at midnight, are the most outstanding
elements. Next weekend, on June 26 and 27, on Eivissa and Formentera, a new edition of the Adlib fashion show will be held, promoted originally in the 70s by the Yugoslavian princess, Smilja Mihailovitch, and now organised by the Patronat de la Moda d'Eivissa i Formentera. The opening parade will take place on Saturday in Sa Punta des Molí in Sant Antoni de Portmany (Eivissa), and on Sunday the catwalk show will be held in the Lighthouse of la Mola (Formentera). In this new edition, presented by María José Suárez, the students of the Art School of Eivissa will participate, as well as 23 designers who will present the Adlib tendencies for 2004. As usual, the places where the fashion show will take place
are very special. Sa Punta des Molí is one of the most unique places
in the municipality of Sant Antoni de Portmany, with an old flour mill,
a "sènia", a "trull", the old peasant's house
and a newly built outside auditorium. On the other hand, the lighthouse
of la Mola is one of the most spectacular spots of the island of Formentera.
Situated 142 metres over the sea level, is considered to be a magic place
and was mentioned by Jules Verne in one of his novels. |
