Ibiza delays until May the removal of posidonia of the coast

The enviromental councilman, Joan Rubio, emphasizes that the presence of this poseidonia alga contributes to maintain the sand on the beaches.

The City council of Ibiza town will delayed until next month of May the mechanical cleaning of posidonia that is accumulated in beaches of the municipality, right at the beginning of the tourist season. He also emphasized that this alga contributes to the protection of the surroundings areas during storms. the councilman explained that the workers of the municipal cleaning service remove by hand all the garbage daily. Rubio assured that the present state of the coast of the Ibiza "is good", although recognized that as of next month they will work daily to guarantee the good condition of all municipal beaches.

The enviromental councilman also affirmed that the Consistorio is negotiating with the Red Cross of Ibiza a plan of security for the coast of Vila, that will include a life guard in all beaches of the municipality, to fulfill the decree of the Balearic Govern that regulates the security in the coast of the Islands. Rubio remembered that the last year a "important economic effort" was made to assure the presence of life guards.

36% of the people in Ibiza favor the term ` nationī

36.3 percent of the people in Ibiza and the rest of Balearics are in favor of changing the statutes to introduce the term ` nationī, which positions the islands as the third independent community in which there is a greater number of citizens that defend this nomenclature, behind Cataluņia and the Basque Country. 20% of Ibiza-Formentera residents are foreigners

Data of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reflects that 20 percent of the residents in Ibiza and Formentera are foreigners, whereas in the rest of Spain the number reaches the 8.5 percent. Both of the municipalities with the smallest population, Sant Joan and Formentera, are those that present a greater proportion of inhabitants of foreign nationality, according to the INE. Most of foreign residents are of European origin, mainly German, whereas the total of extra-communitarian immigrants surpasses the 12,000 people. In teh Balearic Islands, the number reaches the 63,000 people.
The residents coming from American countries represent 8,056 registered residents, followed by the African immigrants (most are from Morocco) who add up to 3,259, and 766 come from some Asian countrys. The statistics of the INE also make reference to 30 immigrants from Australia.

The distribution of the different nationalities of foreign residents in Ibiza and Formentera is not uniform. Three quaters of the Ecuadorian living in the pituisas live in Ibiza Town. While Formentera, Santa Eulalia and San Joan are the preferred residence areas of Germans.
