55% of Ibiza residents are foreigners
A bit more than 53,000 residents of Ibiza and Formentera were born in the Balearic Islands, which supposes 44.7%, whereas the foreigners and Spaniards of other autonomies add up to 65,600......55.3% of the total.
The fundamental reason for this demographic change is found in the spectacular increase of the non-Spanish population that has fixed its residence in the archipaelago. If in 2000 there were 12,308 foreign residents, last year the number were of 26,908, an increase of 118.6% (14,600 people more). The increase of the Spaniards was of 5.529 individuals (it has gone from 33,167 to 38,696), and seems modest, although it supposes 16% more.
The number of children born in the Balearic Islands has also grown during the last year, although at a rate of 5,12%.
Ibiza Town is the most extreme case. Whereas in last five years the "local" population has only increased in 754 people (4,4%), reaching the 17,733 individuals, the foreigners have grown a 261%, with 7,025 residents more, that locates them close to 10,000 people (9.713), whereas in 2000 they were only 2.688.
In Sant Antonio the respective increases are of 239 and 1,923 individuals, that percentage suppose rises of 2.8% and 110%.
Santa Eulalia has the biggest increase of population in each one of the three groups: 723 Balearic (12.006), 1,436 Spaniards of other autonomies (8.607) and 2,574 foreigners.
