Ibiza and the rest of Balears recovers 8% of the forest surface in 15 years
The abandoned agricultural zones and the work of the tree repoblation, conservation and recovery of diverse species contribute to the increase of the forest area in Ibiza.
Agencies the forest surface of Balears has reached the 223,600.42 hectares, that represents the 45 percent of the total of territory of the islands and that supposes an 8 percent more on the 205,000 forest hectares which it had the archipelago at the beginning of the Nineties. Thus it reveals a study presented yesterday by the manager of the Balearic Institute of Naturaleza (IBANAT), Miguel Sintes, in the celebration of World-wide Forest Day, that it attributes this increase of the surface to the "gradual abandoning of agricultural zones that open the way to more abundant wild species" in the islands (like the pine, the soft coal, the oak, and tamarell) and to the work of repoblación, conservation and recovery of diverse species in extition danger. With respect to the losses of forest masses, sources of conselleria informed into which in the last three years 145 fires and were devastated 50 hectares in Ibiza and Formentera. Sintes indicated that "the actions of conservation of Balearic forest genetic material" for the increase of the forest masses have been essential, a plan that has been developing since 2004 according to a strategy designed by the Service of Forest Management and Protection of ground thanks to which "they are conserved near three hundred lots of seeds of more than ninety different native species". The work for repoblación of the zones affected by fires, between which is the mountain range of Morna, in Sant Carles, maintains a ascending progression, according to Sintes, that said that, in 2006, it is anticipated that they are the 122 hectares repopulated. During 2005, the IBANAT acted on 70 hectares, whereas in 2004 42 were repoblaron. The performances that Sintes has announced for the summer are the removal of vegetation according to a plan of cleaning to create fire-resistant forest. "the objective is to create 240 hectares of cleared zones that allow to delay the advance of the fire in case of fire", declared Sintes.
