20% of Ibiza-Formentera residents are foreigners

Data of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reflects that 20 percent of the residents in Ibiza and Formentera are foreigners, whereas in the rest of Spain the number reaches the 8.5 percent. Both of the municipalities with the smallest population, Sant Joan and Formentera, are those that present a greater proportion of inhabitants of foreign nationality, according to the INE. Most of foreign residents are of European origin, mainly German, whereas the total of extra-communitarian immigrants surpasses the 12,000 people. In teh Balearic Islands, the number reaches the 63,000 people.
The residents coming from American countries represent 8,056 registered residents, followed by the African immigrants (most are from Morocco) who add up to 3,259, and 766 come from some Asian countrys. The statistics of the INE also make reference to 30 immigrants from Australia.

The distribution of the different nationalities of foreign residents in Ibiza and Formentera is not uniform. Three quaters of the Ecuadorian living in the pituisas live in Ibiza Town. While Formentera, Santa Eulalia and San Joan are the preferred residence areas of Germans.
