MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL of IBIZA TOWN

Apart from the market stands, there will be street shows of jugglers,
medieval music, sword fight re-enactments, falconry demonstrations,
heraldic parades and demonstrations of Ibiza handcrafts that have not changed in all these centuries..
Like last year, over 130,000 people are expected to attend.

This year the festival will get off with a BIG BOOM...firing of canons and a mock assault of the fortress!

The Medieval Festival of Ibiza Town will take place May 11th-14th, 2005 within the Medieval walls of Ibiza´s ancient hilltop fortress.

There are many places in Spain which would lend an authentic Medieval atmosphere to such an event, but Ibiza Town is probably the perfect place. Not only because of its' XVI century walls and buildings, but also because of Ibiza´s medieval history.

It was a time when many cultures and religions overlapped on the island.....Moors, Christians and Jews all lived here.
And this festival actually gives you the feeling of how it could have been 7 centuries ago.

heraldic parades and demonstrations of Ibiza handcrafts that have not changed in all these centuries..

This, the IVth edition, of the Ibiza 'Fiesta Medieval'', has not been exempt from politcal discord.
According to Ibizás Mayor Xico Tarrés (Progresista Party), the financial contribution to the budget for the Medieval Festival this year has been cut in half by the higher island governemnt (EL Consell Insular-Partido Popular-Conservative Party).
And curiously, by the same amount of money as the budget for the Consel Insular´s own semi-private 25th Anniversay Celebration (300,000 Euros).
Sr. Tarrés sees this as just another attempt by the 'Populares' to make everything the Socialists plan turn out...well, badly. But he vows that the festival will go on in spite of the cut, and the funds will be found to make the festival the best ever.

Long story short---don´t miss this event. May is the FIESTA month 'par excelance' on Ibiza.....with good reason....the weather is normally fantastic, and includes these other 'FIESTAS'---1st Sunday in May, Labour Day, the Commeration ceremonies of 'Ibiza-Heritage of Humanity' and the Fiestas of Puig D'en Valls.
